The Power of EMDR therapy

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a type of therapy designed to help people who have experienced traumatic events. During EMDR, we will take you through guided eye movements and other forms of bilateral stimulation (e.g., tapping or tones) while you recall the traumatic event or negative thoughts for which you are seeking support.

This method of recalling events or emotions has been shown to reduce the distress associated with them and it’s used to treat a wide range of mental health issues, including PTSD, other traumas, anxiety, and depression.

How do I know if EMDR is right for me?

If the effects of trauma have started to impact your daily life, you are feeling ‘stuck’, or find yourself reliving certain experiences, EMDR may be beneficial for you.

Trauma symptoms are a sign of your system protecting you. Your mind is protecting you from experiencing too much too soon or for too long. If you are experiencing symptoms, it may mean that your system is now ready to work through the trauma.

6 Indicators That EMDR Therapy Might Provide The Results You Are Looking For:

Do you find yourself instinctively avoiding situations, places, or even people that remind you of your traumatic experiences? This avoidance may cause you to miss out on once-joyful and fulfilling experiences. It could be skipping social events, changing routines, or avoiding certain conversations – small steps that create a barrier between you and the aspects of life that cause you pain. While it may feel protective, it can lead to feelings of isolation and stagnation, limiting your ability to fully engage with your surroundings.

It is natural to seek relief when confronted with the heavy burden of trauma. You may resort to behaviours such as overspending or substance abuse to temporarily escape from painful memories or emotions. These quick fixes may provide temporary relief, but they frequently lead to more complex problems later on. Financial strain, physical health issues, and emotional dependence are just a few of the long-term consequences.

Trauma affects more than just the mind; it can also manifest physically. You may experience constant body tension, aches, and pains as a result of your body storing stress. It may cause sleep disruption, leaving you exhausted and lacking motivation to engage in physical activity. Furthermore, you may find yourself turning to food for comfort, which can have an impact on your overall well-being, weight, and relationship with food and nutrition.

Living with trauma can be an emotional roller coaster. Moments of calm and contentment may be few and far between, replaced instead by a range of intense emotions. Your emotional landscape may feel unpredictable and chaotic, ranging from persistent anxious thoughts and feelings of sadness to sudden flashes of anger. This constant upheaval can be exhausting and leave you feeling overwhelmed, leaving little room for neutrality or peace.

Trauma can change the way you see the world, including your relationships. Increased emotions may colour your interactions, resulting in misunderstandings, conflicts, or even a complete withdrawal from relationships. These patterns, whether a defensive reaction to perceived criticism or an emotional reaction to a casual comment, can strain relationships and potentially lead to isolation.

Feeling misunderstood or under attack can activate a natural defence mechanism, making you feel as if you must constantly defend yourself. This can lead to guarded behaviours, which can exacerbate feelings of loneliness and perpetuate a cycle of self-judgment. It can make it difficult to find comfort in the company of others, instead increasing the sense of being constantly on the defensive, feeding into a cycle of distress and isolation.

Questions about EMDR therapy

When dealing with trauma, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed and stuck, but it’s important to remember that these feelings don’t have to be permanent. Therapy, including EMDR, can assist you in processing your trauma and reducing its emotional impact. It is entirely possible to feel different and find relief from the feelings you are currently experiencing with time, patience, and the right support.

Seeking therapy isn’t a sign of permanent damage, instead it’s an investment in your healing process. Everyone’s therapeutic journey is unique; some people may require shorter periods of therapy, while others may benefit from long-term therapy. The goal of therapy is to provide you with the tools and strategies to manage and overcome your trauma, which can lead to a decreased reliance on therapy over time. You are not permanently damaged; you are simply taking the necessary steps to heal.

While the events that caused trauma can’t be changed, the impact of trauma on your life can be transformed. Trauma can leave deep emotional wounds, but therapies like EMDR are specifically designed to help heal these wounds. Through therapy, it’s possible to process your traumatic experiences, reduce their emotional toll, and move towards a healthier, more positive future.

Absolutely, you can. It’s common for trauma to affect your self-perception and cause feelings of low self-worth, but therapy can help rebuild your self-esteem. Through EMDR and other therapeutic interventions, you can work to challenge negative beliefs about yourself, develop a healthier self-image, and cultivate self-compassion. With time and patience, you can learn to not only feel good about yourself, but also to recognize your inherent worth and strength.

The length of EMDR treatment depends on the individual and the complexity of their trauma. It can range from a few sessions for a single trauma to a longer period for complex or multiple traumas.
